True. Friends here in Mexico had a visit from German friends of theirs. Who had a guide to Mexico in German. Our friend starts leafing through and exclaims: No way! Not possible. There was a photo of my wife and daughters at a restaurant in Guanajuato a couple of years back… In a German guide. The odds, the probability is close to zero…

Good year so far. Milestones like 300 followers and tomorrow is my 200th post! Working up my courage to talk to agents again about my memoir Supergringa in Spain.

I’m quite impressed at how the travellers of Paris are not staring at their phones that much! Over here, EVERYONE’s gaze is fixed on their screens, all seated in a row, zombie-like. I’m always tempted to take a photo but too shy. Maybe I should do a candid photo shoot like yours, for the sake of historical documentation of these odd times!!!
Good point. Compared to Asia they’re not as glued to their phones. From observation I would say most use it for music. A few for reading.
Taking photos so close is hard. You really have to pretend you’re texting. And only 4 or 5 of the 100’s of people I took noticed… 🙂 My next challenge, which I already do sometimes is to just walk up to them and ask… 😉
I would prefer asking, in theory I’m not a great fan of candid pics. Except your posts! And historical documentation for future generations! 😂 But everyone does it nowadays, so voilà. Anyways, I enjoy virtual-traveling with you!

Funny you ask! Yesterday was the first day it was light when I went to work and also when I left work!!! Just barely, but still! What a difference it makes! 💕 And there, how hot is the Mexican sun? Winter, right? A while ago you were sayung the temps were like ours!!
It does make a difference. Light is coming. 🙂
The winter here is a joke really. Temps of 5C before sunrise for 3-4 weeks. Now we’re re back around 20C during the day… I will soon turn off the new heating I had installed last year…

I must confess that the photo of Traveller 77 is the first person-on-phone photo that I’ve ever liked. (Lie, I like a few of my own, I mean the first of other people’s.) But according to the title of this post, they are Tavellers, not Travellers! 😉 They must be all members of the most secret club called “Tavello”. You know the first rule of it: it doesn’t exist.

Great and wonderfully varied collection of traveler photos but why would you want to buy a kippah to see what would happen?
I’m not Jewish, but there has been an increase of aggressions in recent years on jews in France, which I cannot tolerate.
So I wanted to wear a kippah in the metro and see what happened. 🙂

You could end up getting hurt. The increase in hate crimes across the globe is disturbing and so very sad.
Agreed. On al counts. I used to think that France, Europe were an exception, but, not anymore… You can get knifed easily in Paris, London. I almost got mugged in Paris last summer. Broad daylight. In the Marais. Got out of it by sheer luck and quick thinking… 🙂

So many places across the globe that used to be considered great for tourists have become – ahem – much less so which is terribly sad. When planning our trips I look into safety issues much harder than I used to. You just have to use sense no matter where you go or choose not to go.
Agreed. The thing is I have lived in “dangerous” countries a good bit of my life. I used to look back on France or Europe as safe places… Which they still are, relatively. 700+ homicides a year in France for a population of 66 mil. 30-40,000 homicides here in Mexico for a population of 120 mil. But the violence is on the increase in France and Europe. People are carrying knives! And I almost got mugged last year in Paris… Sigh. 😉
This are fabulous street photographs, Brian. The Banksy shot caught my eye- so great – looks like she’s either sneezing or covering her mouth for protection from the flying feathers. 🙂 The b&w of the young man on the phone is terrific, the tiny child hidden in the blankets…I almost missed her! All are moments in time, familiar but so easily missed by those who are looking but not seeing.

70? Interesting. Matter of fact that expo was last year, we just went to the 2020 edition on Sunday… More art and travellers. Child? Do you mean 72, in Chipas? Or 77, in the metro? (True, though she probably is 20-25, they’re all children now aren’t they?

LOL. The technique can be applied anywhere. Just pretend you’re texting with your camera on and the sound off… (No shutter sound please). I actually caught a few good travellers on Sunday when we went to a very fancy, very hipster contemporary art expo here in Mexico city. Need to sort the pix out and will post them.
Next destination? Paris, of course, and possibly Montpellier… No secret…
I love taking photos on a train like that. The woman in the feathers is amazing, nice capture. I’m a friend of Kates. Thank you for sending her the man in the goatee. She is a treasure we have to take care of.
p.s. I think my favorite is the woman resting on her way home for the thousandth time after a day at work. Or maybe she is on her way to work and not looking forward to another day of the grind. Or, I know, she’s hung over and thinking “Lord, please let me get through this day. I promise not to do it again.”
Traveller 75 I guess? (Though one of my favourites is #77). I like her. On the Paris metro, you see so many people exhausted. They’re trying to catch a bit of rest before what comes next… And that’s when there is no strike… 😉
Yes, 75. My sister got so mad at me when I was sneaking photos of travelers on the metro, or the train, when we visited Paris and Belgium.
LOL. Your sister is right. That was an experiment last summer. You pretend you’re texting, turn the sound of (no click) snap a few. Later you check the pics. But I am still a tad uncomfortable with the invasion of privacy. And if somebody catches you? Could be awkward.
It makes for great photos though. 😉

That was a new experiment I tried this summer in Paris. I still have some… qualms about the way I take those pictures. But I guess “candid” photography of people is always a bit invasive…

I think I know what you mean? Modern requirements and privacy laws require us to seek permission of the subject before publishing. Yet it is so formal, and once you seek permission, the natural spontaneity of the photography diminishes, which means you have to take the photo first then ask permission…..
I have a lot of the backs of people’s head for this reason. Lol…
